Here are three tips that you can use to help ensure that your own scales stay calibrated in the future.

1. Use calibration weights that you can trust.

When calibrating your industrial scales, you likely use calibration weights to help you dial in the accuracy of your balances. Since calibration weights serve as the basis upon which you will determine how to adjust your scales so that they can weigh more accurately, it's absolutely vital that your weights be made by a manufacturer that you can trust.

Look for weights that can be traced to the International Prototype Kilogram (IPK), a weight that is used to define the current SI unit of mass. Access to this weight is controlled by the International Committee for Weights and Measures, so you should only purchase your calibration weights from a company that can verify they have been granted access to create copies of the IPK.

2. Always calibrate in the same location where weighing will take place.

Changes in atmospheric conditions (humidity, temperature, etc.) can affect the accuracy of your industrial scales. To ensure that you are calibrating your scales properly, you should always conduct your calibration activities in the same location where your scale will be used to weigh manufacturing materials.

This ensures that the same atmospheric conditions the scale will be subjected to during weigh-ins will be present during calibration, eliminating the potential for weighing errors caused by improper calibration.

3. Calibrate your scales regularly.

Regularly maintaining your industrial scales is the best way to ensure that they will provide accurate readings when weighing manufacturing materials. Calibration should be a part of your regular maintenance routine.

Industrial scale manufacturers recommend that you calibrate your scales at least once every six months to a year, but you may find that you need to calibrate more frequently if you are using your scale regularly. Be sure to calibrate often to ensure the most accurate weight measurements.
